Also known as Sweet Buckeye. A close relative of the Horsechestnut family. The tallest and healthiest of the Buckeyes. Medium fast, oval, upright growth to a height of 50 to 75 feet. Spread 30 to 50 feet. The five, 6 inch long, toothed leaflets are arranged palm like on short stalks. The dark green, deciduous leaves display a good yellow to pumpkin Autumn color. The showy, yellow flowers are produced on 6 inch long, upright panicles in April or May. The flowers are followed by the showy, inedible fruit. Yellow Buckeye husks are smooth, light brown and spineless. In September-October the fruits mature. The leathery capsule splits in fall and reveals the 1 or 2 shiny, 2 ½ inch, oblong shaped seeds. When ripe, each nut turns red brown with a whitish basal scar resembling the eye of a deer to which the name refers. North American native. Low maintenance. Prefers acidic, moist, well drained soil. Plant in full sun or partially shaded location. The light weight wood is used for crates, boxes and furniture. Attractive in larger gardens and parks. Also a suitable street specimen and shade tree. In colonial times, Buckeyes were carried as good luck charms.
