Medium growth 20 to 80 feet. Spread 20 to35 feet. Stiff, dark, lustrous green needles are 2 in a bundle and 3 to 5 inches long. Grows best in moist fertile well drained soil. A dense spreading pine with pendulous branches and a broad pyramidal head. The best evergreen for planting along the seashore in the northeastern United States. It withstands seashore conditions, even a small amount of salt water spray. It has thrived in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard where other plants have failed. It grows rather irregularly; Japanese have trained this tree into many interesting forms. Good for specimen, windbreaks, screens, Japanese gardens, bonsai, residential and park plantings.
