Also known as Moosewood, Moose Maple and Goosefoot Maple. The Striped Maple is a small deciduous understory tree or large shrub. Will grow to a height of 20 to 30 feet. Spread 6 to 8 feet. The leaves are a deep lemon yellow-green which are shaped roughly like the foot of a goose. Leaves change to vibrant yellow in autumn. In late summer, early fall the winged fruit is eaten by red squirrels and chipmunks. The bark when young is green marked with vertical greenish-white stripes, becoming gray as the tree ages. Hence, the name Striped Maple. Performs best at the edge of a woodland where it is partially shaded. Likes well drained, cool, moist, slightly acidic forest soils. Often growing on slopes. This maple is eaten by porcupines, beaver and rabbits and provides browse for deer and moose. Attracts many wildlife species for nesting, feeding and perching. Good for naturalizing. A native species of Pennsylvania sometimes referred to as Pennsylvania Maple.
