Fast growing hardwood with a broad spreading crown growing to a height of 30 to 50 feet. Spread 20 to 40 feet. Native to North America. Large 3 to 5 inch long dark green leaves are eye catching. Bark is dark grey-brown, ridged and furrowed with flattened ridges. Abundant fruit makes this a valuable tree. The 1 inch long deep red almost black fruit ripens over an extended period of time in mid summer. Fall color is subdued yellow. Prefers warm, well drained soil, but widely adaptable to many soil conditions. Shade tolerant. Lots of space needed to grow if planted as an ornamental. Fruits are a favorite of people, birds and small mammals.Very effective decoy for berry growers. Mulberries produce excellent jam, jelly, juice and flavorful wine.
