Also known as Virginia Sweetspire or Virginia Willow. Grows to 6 feet in height, with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. A very showy and colorful shrub in spring and fall. Perfect white, lightly fragrant flowers appear in May or June, depending on geographical areas. These are born on previous season’s wood, so pruning should be done only after flowering. In the fall, dark green leaves change to a spectacular florescent red, which can hang on all winter with temperatures above 20°F. Widely used as a screen in mass plantings, space 8 feet apart. As a native plant, it is found along moist stream banks, but it has good drought tolerance also. There are many cultivars of Itea, but Henry’s Garnet is thought to be the best for vivid fall color. Growth rate medium fast with adequate moisture.
