Also known as Cucumber Magnolia, Yellow Cucumbertree, Yellow-Flower Magnolia and Mountain Magnolia. Native to North America. Rapid growing to a height of 60 to 80 feet; spread 35 to 60 feet. Pyramidal shape when young, becomes broad, oval or rounded with age. Large, dark green leaves measure 8 to 10 inches long and 4 to 8 inches wide. Pleasantly fragranced, inconspicuous, yellow tinged flowers appear May to early June. Pinkish red fruit 2 to 3 inches long emerges in October resembling a small cucumber; hence, the name Cucumbertree. Soft ashy-brown fall foliage is quite attractive. Makes a stately silhouette in winter when branches are bare. Plant in full sun or partial shade. Likes rich, moist, well drained soil. Does best in slightly acidic soil. Great for parks, large estates and golf courses as this tree needs plenty of space. Gives a noble effect when planted singly. Seed pods attract birds and wildlife.
